When winter is coming to a close and the days are getting warmer, everyone seems to be in a better mood. You’ll be able to enjoy the nice weather more if you have taken care of your house first. Here are six steps to prepare your home for spring.

Replace Filters to Prepare Your Home for Spring

The change of seasons is a great time to check all your systems requiring filters, like the HVAC, fridge, and air purifier. Changing the HVAC filter will help your AC run more efficiently as you begin to use it on warmer days. Water filtration systems, including those in your refrigerator, need new filters to provide clean water.

Care For Your Water Heater

As you prepare your home for spring, take a look at that system responsible for clean dishes and morning shower: your water heater. If you have a tank water heater, hire a professional to service it. It needs to be flushed and have the anode rod checked to keep it running like new.

Sprinkler Systems

Check that your sprinkler system for the lawn fared well over the winter. Check the sprinkler heads for cracks and test out the system to make sure it is watering the correct areas of the yard.

Prepare Your Home for Spring With a Duct Cleaning

After a winter of heavy furnace use, the air ducts may have built up dust and debris. If you haven’t had a duct cleaning in a few years, now is a great time to schedule one. Cleaning the ducts improves air quality and boosts energy efficiency.

Check the Roof

Your roofing system is integral to keeping your house in top shape. Get out that ladder (or have a professional do it for you) and have a look at the condition of your roof. As you prepare your home for spring, inspect the shingles, the vents, and the state of your gutters.

Clean the Gutters

While you (or your contractor) assess the gutters, why not give them a good cleaning? Even if you did it in the fall before the snow fell, the gutters have likely filled up with more dirt and debris.

After you have knocked these items off your to-do list, you will be well on your way to preparing your home for spring.
